THE BLUE AND YELLOW
Most Dala horses are red with green and white. These two are painted in blue and yellow - the colours of the Swedish flag - and they are the pair people choose when the point is Sweden rather than folk art generally.

The white horse carries blue harness lines with yellow in the mane and saddle. The yellow horse reverses it: blue and white kurbits over a yellow body. Side by side they read as a matched pair, which is how most people buy them.

WHICH ONE, AND WHICH SIZE?
- White body - lighter, and the blue reads more clearly. Suits a pale interior
- Yellow body - warmer and more striking. The one people notice across a room
- 7-10 cm - shelf, windowsill, desk or a gift to post
- 13 cm - our most popular size, and the one to start with
- 17-25 cm - display pieces. Sideboard, mantelpiece or entrance hall

A GIFT WITH A FLAG ON IT
This is the piece for a specifically Swedish occasion - a citizenship, a national day on 6 June, a Midsommar table, or anyone abroad who grew up there. A red Dala horse says folk art. A blue and yellow one says Sweden.

WHAT IS A DALA HORSE?
The Dala horse comes from Dalarna in central Sweden, where wooden horses have been carved and painted for centuries - the oldest surviving example dates to the mid-1500s, from Vastra Fors. The flowing floral decoration is called kurbits, a folk painting tradition from the same region. The Dala horse became Sweden's most recognised symbol after the 1939 New York World's Fair, and it is still made and painted in Dalarna today.

ABOUT OUR HORSES
We work directly with established workshops and independent artists in Dalarna. Every horse is painted by hand, which is why yours will not be identical to the photograph - the brushwork varies from piece to piece, and smaller sizes carry a simpler pattern than larger ones. That variation is the point: each one is an individual object, not a printed copy.

CARE
Dust with a dry or barely damp cloth. Keep out of direct sunlight and away from damp, as with any painted wood.
